Understanding research evidence levels

Peptide claims can be based on very different kinds of evidence. Identifying the study type helps readers understand what a result can—and cannot—show.

From early to mature evidence

  • Laboratory research: explores mechanisms in cells or isolated systems.
  • Animal research: examines biological effects in a whole organism, but does not establish a human outcome.
  • Human observational research: can identify associations but may not establish cause.
  • Controlled clinical research: can provide stronger evidence when methods, sample size, and reporting are robust.
  • Systematic synthesis: compares multiple suitable studies and depends on the quality of the evidence included.

Questions to ask

Check the population, comparison group, measured outcome, study duration, publication status, conflicts of interest, and whether independent teams reproduced the finding. Evidence maturity is not the same as regulatory approval.
